We hope these activities help you learn more about your community, take action, and cause positive change.

Description: The U.S. Postal Service considers suggestions for stamp subjects that celebrate the American experience. There is a list of criteria to determine whether a stamp design will be considered for eligibility for production (e.g. stamp must feature American or American related subjects, should honor extraordinary and enduring contributions to American society, history, culture or environment, etc.).
In this activity, you will create an original design for a postage stamp to commemorate Black History Month. You will be provided with four (4) elements that must be included in the design. The rest of the design is up to you. In addition to the stamp design, you will respond to two (2) questions. The response to each question is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.
For this activity, you must be logged in to a PERSONAL (NOT MCPS) Google account in order to access the Google Form. Don't worry if you do not have a personal Google account, you can read the full instructions and submission information here.
The stamp designs will be posted (anonymously) on the PTA bulletin board at Hoover for students to view.

How SSL Hours Are Earned: Each student will earn up to two and one half (2.5) SSL hours upon completion of this activity (0.50 SSL hour for each of four [4] stamp elements and 0.25 SSL hour for each response to the two [2] questions).

Description: In January 2021, Amanda Gorman read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration of President Joe Biden. A year later, she released her poem “New Day’s Lyric” reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the coming year.
In this activity, you will be provided with a video of Amanda Gorman speaking "New Day’s Lyric” along with the written text. You will be asked to respond to three (3) questions about the meaning and significance of the poem. The response to each of the three (3) questions is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.

Description: National Make a Friend Day is February 11th and provides an opportunity to meet someone new and (hopefully) make a new friendship. Through friendships, people are exposed to new perspectives and are challenged by new ways of thinking. Friendships promote community and working together.

It is a time for inclusiveness, for students to see beyond individual differences and engage in meaningful conversations over lunchtime. It is also a time to help end social isolation and create a culture of belonging.
In this activity, you will explore and reflect on the significance of inclusion and belonging by taking action and answering three (3) questions. The response to each of the three (3) questions is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.

Description: World Day of Social Justice is on February 20th and was created by the United Nations to promote global solidarity to advance opportunities for all. It is a day to reflect on working for fair outcomes for individuals through employment, social dialogue, social protection and fundamental principles and rights at work. It is also a day to focus on social injustices in the world (systemic racism, gender inequality, etc.) and to work towards creating solutions.
