Every year, Hoover PTA hosts Taste of Hoover, an international festival, to celebrate the racial and cultural diversity in the Hoover community. Typically, the event is held in-person and students prepare presentations and share dance, music, and food native to their countries of origin. This year we will celebrate virtually. Below are 7 SSL activities created help you explore your own heritage and customs and those of others in the Hoover community.

Description: Let's learn some food culture and share some recipes! In this activity, students will share family recipes from their country of origin. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about their own culture and share the cuisines from their rich heritage. The recipes will be shared with others on the Hoover PTA's Taste of Hoover Digital Cookbook webpage.

Description: Stump your family and friends and ask them for the definition of vexillology. It means the study the flags. Flags are used to symbolize a country's history. In this activity, identify the countries for 10 flags. Then choose 3 of the flags and provide information about the symbols in each flag. The answers are required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to receive SSL credit.

Description: Share information about your country of origin or learn about other countries through colorful posters or Google slide presentations. In this activity, use your creativity to create a hand-drawn or digital poster OR Google slide presentation that will spread information about a chosen country. With permission, the poster or Google slide presentation will be posted on the PTA's Taste of Hoover webpage.

Description: Many people in our Hoover community immigrated to the United States from other countries. In the brave journey from birth place to new country, many stories emerge that are worth sharing. In this activity, share an immigration story of your own, a family member, or someone close to you. Answer 4 questions about the immigration experience of that person. The answers are required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to receive SSL credit. With permission, responses will be posted anonymously on the PTA's Taste of Hoover webpage.

Description: Traditions and culture from a particular country can inspire the creation of imaginative and meaningful art. In this activity, create a beautiful piece of art inspired by your country of origin or a country which you feel a connection. Submit a photo of the art piece, title of the art piece, and an explanation of the title and how the art was inspired by your country of origin/choice. The explanation of the title and inspiration is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to receive SSL credit. With permission, completed art pieces will be displayed on the PTA's Taste of Hoover webpage.

Description: Traditional songs and dances have been used throughout history to represent the people and culture of different countries. In this activity, share a traditional song or dance from your country of origin (or a country which you feel a connection) and answer 3 questions about how the song or dance represents the people and culture of your chosen country. Answers are required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to receive SSL credit.

In this activity, name a public figure who immigrated to the United State and made positive contributions to our society. Answer 3 questions about the chosen person.
