Description: Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States and the namesake of our school, went through many highs (recognition of his humanitarian efforts during WWI) and lows (blame for his inability to end the strife of the American people during the Great Depression) during his career. In this activity, you will learn more about Herbert Hoover and reflect on important leadership traits. First, you will answer three (3) short answer questions about Herbert Hoover. Then, you will respond to three (3) long answer questions about leadership. The response to each of the three (3) long answer questions is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.

Description: Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister during WWII and namesake of your future high school, was known for his inspirational speeches and his refusal to give up in challenging times. Learn more about Winston Churchill here, here, and here.
In Part One of this activity, you will be given ten (10) Winston Churchill quotes and will reflect on the meaning and significance of four (4) of the quotes. In Part Two, you will identify a problem or challenge at school or in the larger community and reflect how Winston Churchill's inspiring words will help you to affect change to solve the problem or to overcome the challenge. In Part Three, you will provide an original quote of your own that will inspire others to rise to action to affect positive change in their community or the world at large. Each response (except for the original quote) is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.

Description: World Children's Day is November 20th and marks the U.N. General Assembly's adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of Children (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). The Convention touches on many children's rights we may take for granted such as the right to life, health, education, protection from violence, and anti-discrimination. In this activity, you will explore and reflect on the children's rights in the U.S. and abroad and how those rights need protection by answering four (4) questions. The response to each of the four (4) questions is required to be at least 3-4 sentences in length in order to earn SSL credit.

Description: Haiku, a form of Japanese poetry, consists of 3 lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third (a total of 17 syllables). The philosophy of this style is to focus on a brief moment in time using colorful, thought-provoking images. Learn more about haiku here, here, and here.
In this activity, you will write an original haiku focused on advocating for a change to meet the needs of the Hoover community or the community at large. In addition, you will reflect on why the change is important and necessary and what actions others may take as a result of reading your haiku.
Submitted haikus will be posted anonymously in Hoover to inspire the Hoover community to take action.
