We are fortunate to partner with 3 local organizations: Children's Inn at National Institutes of Health (NIH), Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC, and The Village at Rockville to create these SSL opportunities that will enrich Hoover students while also giving back to the local community. In these activities, learn about the important services provided by these organizations and help give support to those
in need.
When we help others, we also help ourselves.

Create Uplifting Care Packages for Children Staying at the Children's Inn
The Children's Inn at NIH opened its doors in June 1990 with the mission "to provide a free place like home to children and young adults NIH patients from across the United States and the world while they participate in the life-changing clinical research studies at the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center." Since its opening, over 14,000 children and their families have stayed at the Children's Inn at NIH while participating in clinical research studies and receiving treatment at NIH for life-threatening illnesses. Description: In this activity, create care package items to be given to children staying at the Children's Inn at NIH. The items include: handwritten card, inspirational art, or bracelet.
Instructions for Handwritten Card: Create a handwritten card that will uplift and inspire children staying at the Children's Inn at NIH. The message in the card should be at least 3-4 sentences in length and should NOT contain any personal information (student's full name, address, phone number, email, personal photo, etc). Also, the card should NOT contain any messages that reference: the child being sick, the child being in the hospital, how you may feel sorry for them, etc.
Instructions for Inspirational Art: Create colorful and uplifting art pieces that will be given to children staying at the Children's Inn at NIH. The art pieces will uplift the moods of the children when they receive medical treatment. The art pieces should be 8.5" x 11" or smaller in size and may contain inspirational messages.
Instructions for Bracelet: Make fun bracelets to show support for children staying at the Children's Inn at NIH. Watch any of these videos (Video #1, Video #2, Video #3) to learn how to make bracelets for this activity.
How SSL Hours Are Earned: Complete the activity according to the instructions and earn up to 3 SSL hours (1 SSL hour awarded for any 3 care package items [hand-written card, inspirational art, or bracelet] produced, with a limit of 9 items produced in total).
In order to earn SSL hours, complete the SSL Credit Form. Instructions for the local contactless drop off procedure is included on the SSL Credit Form.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities have been helping families for over 40 years. Theses charities provides 3 amazing programs to families in need: Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The Ronald McDonald House program provides housing for families who have traveled far from homes in order for their children to receive specialty medical care that is not available in their hometown. The 2 local Ronald McDonald Houses are located in Washington DC (14th St. NE) and Falls Church, Virginia.

The Village at Rockville is a local retirement community that provides various housing and health care options to older adults in our community based on their physical and medical needs.

Description: In this activity, create beautiful handmade or digital art that will brighten the spirits of senior residents at The Village at Rockville. The art will be collected by the Hoover PTA to be made into a collage to be displayed in various areas in the retirement community.
