STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING (SSL)
SSL OVERVIEW
75 SSL hours are required to graduate. Here is an introduction to SSL. For more detailed information, visit the MCPS SSL Hub for Students where you can find SSL forms, resources, guidelines, and much more.
The deadline to have Student Service Learning (SSL) forms turned in is Friday, May 31, 2024. All SSL forms for any service completed after June 1, 2023, must be submitted to a student’s SSL middle school coordinator or high school coordinator by the systemwide deadline of Friday, May 31. After May 31, SSL forms will no longer be accepted for service completed during the 2023–2024 school year or the summer prior. Students must earn 75 SSL hours in order to graduate from high school.

SSL AWARDS
- Any high school senior who has submitted documentation to show the completion of 240 SSL hours or more will earn the Certificate of Meritorious Service along with a purple tassel for graduation.
- Any middle school student who has submitted documentation to show the completion of the 75-hour SSL graduation requirement (for the first time in middle school) will receive the Superintendent’s SSL Award.

MCPS is offering these opportunities:
- “Speak Up, Save A Life” PSA Contest (Deadline: November 17, 2023) - The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office is hosting a Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest for middle school and high school students that challenges teens to create an original video to promote awareness of the dangers of opioid abuse or overdose and fentanyl among teens. Participants who submit a PSA that meets the contest requirements will earn 10 SSL hours and have a chance to win prizes. To learn more, please visit this link.
- Student-to-Student Extracurricular Series - 10 SSL hours -- VIRTUAL/REMOTE – MCPS is seeking students interested in developing a video presentation with either a leadership moment or extracurricular skill to inspire, teach, and share with their MCPS peers and the greater MCPS community. Students may earn 10 SSL hours for successful submission of all items identified in the Student-To-Student Extracurricular Series Form.

The Climate Health Education Initiative (@climatehealthei on Instagram) aims to inspire youth to achieve sustainability and understand the intersection between climate change and planetary health concepts through educational programs. We offer workshops, after-school programs, and classes to students and last year we organized an environmental education program at Wayside Elementary School. We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about environmental education and public health. Any middle school or high school student (Grades 6-12) in Montgomery County Public Schools is eligible to join and earn SSL hours. Hey Hoover teens - more green, less screen! Drop your phones and come work for MSI! Calling all 7th graders and older who love soccer and would like to earn SSL hours (or get paid) while having fun! Games are played at Hoover!
We are excited to announce new details regarding our MSI Youth Game Leader program! Our Youth Game Leaders enthusiastically manage our soccer games for our first and second grade teams. MANY games are played at Hoover every weekend! Our YGL’s take responsibility for leading two to three hour-long games on Saturdays. You’ll learn valuable leadership, communication, and decision-making skills. Our YGL role makes a perfect “first job”.
